RARE POLICE CLAMSHELL BAYONET WITH THE EARLY, SO CALLED, ‘FELDJAGER‘ GRIP INSIGNIA. COMPLETE WITH FROG AND PORTAPEE.

As I have mentioned many times the variety of Police bayonets from the Weimar period until the end of the Third Reich is amazingly varied. It is easily possible just to make an excellent and large collection, just of them. (and I know people who have!). This is a very nice, ‘standard length’ police bayonet by a very unusual maker Ewald Cleff Solingen. To be honest I can’t remember ever having a Police bayonet by them - ever! Solid nickel/brass fittings, with the normal type of clamshell design. The stag grips are perfect and are attached with nickel rivets. It has not been cut down or altered. The grip insignia is that of the very early police which is a 6 sided star with the Prussian eagle in the middle with a tiny swastika on its breast. Often quoted to be a ‘Feldjager’ insignia is is actually an early Prussian Politzei Nazi era badge only used in 1934-35. In 1936 it was changed to the more common aluminium oval Police badge with oakleaves and the police eagle in the centre. The SA Feldjagerkorps certainly wore Prussian police bayonets. They are period pictures on them in wear. This early Prussian police badge with the small swastika on the birds breast in designated as such, and is shown in the Assmann and OLC catalogues as Preussen Politzei.
The bayonet has a perfect black leather scabbard, matching frog and a rural police portapee with green/silver bullion ball. The heavily nickel plated blade in marked Ewald Cleff on the reverse riccasso. Blade is near perfect but unfortunately someone has tried to sharpen the blade a little 2/3rds of the way down. Not terrible at all, but they have scratched the surface edge and near the tip. I have left it as it is, but with a little work, the surface could be made to look a lot better by removing the scratch marks.
That being said, this is a rare, untouched piece dating from 1934 and used by the police right through the Third Reich period. I’ve priced it very fairly taking into account the blade description above.
