A PAIR OF VERY LATE WAR NAVY DAGGERS BY EICKHORN.

I’ve not had one of these in a long time as unfortunately they don’t survive!! Before production stopped due to the demands of the war, Eickhorn navy daggers were made of the grey zinc alloy and gilded. Pommel and crossguard. The scabbards were made of steel and the blades were plain. The gold gilding was over a silver first plating as the gilding would not adhere to the steel but the silver would and then it was gilded over the top. The gilding was a very thin flash coating and over time and cleaning, it comes off revealing the silver plating underneath. This is what has happened with both of these and they look like silver daggers!! The grey alloy used to cast the pommel and crossguard is also subject to internal cracking etc. It sort of bursts from within!! There is evidence of this on both pommels. The blades are in mint condition and are nickel plated. Both carry the post- 1942 ‘over the shoulder’ squirrel trademark. Both have perfect celluloid over wood grips with original twisted grip wire. No cracks in either one. Perfect. A chance to see what the very last production pieces were like, or use them for spares. The blades and grips are worth a fair amount on their own. Spare navy grips and blades are VERY hard to find!
