These daggers are really a bit of a mystery, as there is no definitive reference material to say exactly what they were used for or given to. However, they are undoubtedly real, very early and extremely rare. Looking a lot like the standard HJ Fartenmeister issue dagger, they are based on an Imperial or Weimar fighting knife. The hilt is solid steel and nickel plated but slightly longer and bigger than a normal HJ knife. The pommels of these daggers have several HJ designs etched into the surfaces. The most common being a floral design with a HJ flag with swastika in the centre. Originally this design was highlighted with paint and the flag would have been red, white with a black swastika in the middle. Unfortunately over time, this has rubbed off. The scabbard on this dagger, and all the other ‘honour’ HJs I have seen and owned, is a standard HJ type with tubular steel body and leather strap and cross loop. The blade is a clipped-back single edge type, a fighting knife blade. The obverse has the logo ‘Gladiator’ in script writing running down the blade. On the reverse is the actual makers name of Carl Wusthof Solingen.
My theory is that these were very early initial production daggers from the instigation of the HJ and were bought or given to initial senior members or officers. They certainly date from the very early ‘30’s and we’re converted/changed/utilised from ‘old stock’ fighting knives.
