AWARD WALL PLAQUE TO SA/LUFTWAFFE MEMBER.

A presented wall plaque monted on period hexagonal black wood. A typical period item that in many different forms were presented as sporting trophy’s etc etc at the time. There are ones for service, for shooting etc etc much as we do now.
This one has a circular embossed silver plaque with a period single engined plane in the centre. Around the edge are ‘DAS DEUTCHE VOLK - MUSS EIN VOLK VON FLIEGERN WERDEN’..This translates to ‘The German people must become a people of Flyers’. This was a phrase taken from a speech by Herman Goring in 1936. Below the plaque is a separately applied smaller plaque with ‘Feld-Wein 39 Seine 6/12’ engraved into it. This translates to ‘Christmas in the Field 39 his 6/12’.
On the reverse of the woof base is the original shop label from where it was purchased. Max Fleig a jeweller in Mannheim who specialises and makes sporting prizes!! I have made some research on what the plaque was awarded for and to whom. Based upon the time, unit number and location of the shop, it seems as though the 6/12 is actually a reference to a SA unit. Sturm 6 if Standarte 12. This was Gruppe Kurpfalz and had its headquarters in Mannheim. So this was probably a former member of Sturm 6, who either in or has transferred to the Luftwaffe.
