AN EARLY EXAMPLE OF A SS ‘33 DAGGER BY HAMMESFAR.

Good untouched examples of these early daggers are becoming more difficult to find. This example dates from the early 1930’s well before the RZM standardised production and more inferior materials were used. Until 1936 when the officers chained dagger was introduced, ALL ranks of the SS wore this type of dagger, either with a vertical hanger or one of the short single hangers. This example has all nickel fittings, which include both crossguards and scabbard fittings. The black ebony wood grip is lovely with no damage or cracks. The grip eagle is nickel. The enamel SS runes button is fine and is turned off centre a little. This seems to be typical with Hammesfar daggers. Scabbard is the early ‘anodised’ finish and is completely intact. The upper scabbard fitting has a little ‘pebble’ dent to the surface. The blade is untouched and unpolished. Not stone mint but Exc++. A lot of original crossgrain polish is present, mainly towards the middle and lower part. The SS motto is clear and deep with background colour. The Gottleib Hammesfar oval trademark, with the Pyramid in the centre, is deeply etched into the reverse riccasso. The lower crossguard is stamped with the Roman numeral III.
