A VERY GOOD EXAMPLE OF THE 1936 SS OFFICERS PARADE DEGEN BY PETR. DAN KREBS.
I have been very lucky this year and managed to find 3 SS Officers parade dagens. They appeared from completely different parts of the country, in totally different circumstances, and I drove for hours to collect and inspect each one!
The SS officers degen was introduced by Himmler in 1936. Up until then there was no official sword for them to wear and a variety of types were used, mainly silver hilted lions head swords. The officers degen was AWARDED to the officers by Himmler, so not all SS officers were allowed to wear them, and they continued to wear their own swords or just stick to the 1936 chained dagger, which they all could wear without permission.
I’ve owned quite a few degens over the years and they seem to either have a plain, no maker blade or are by Karl Julius Krebs, with the lovely lobster trademark.
The D guard hilt obviously has a heavy silver content as some of it has attracted the ‘grey’ silver patina. Black ebony grip with large SS runes button in the centre. Black painted scabbard with upper and lower scabbard fittings. Scabbard body has a couple of surface dents etc. and the profile has been slightly affected. Krebs used nickel screws to attach these to the scabbard body. The upper scabbard fitting has the small stamped SS runes or ‘Kulturzeichen’. This is also stamped under the crossguard but is hidden by patina and the white blade washer.
The semi-matt finish blade is in excellent condition and is 33“ long, sword overall is 38“ overall ). The Peter Dan Krebs trademark logo is stamped into the reverse riccasso.
