THIRD REICH ERA NAVY OFFICERS PARADE SWORD AND BULLION PORTAPEE.

Navy swords are always interesting items. Both German and British naval swords are VERY similar with a couple of distinctive variations. Curved blades and the lower scabbard chape or drag. German navy swords changed very little between WW1 and WW2. The main difference was the type of anchor motif cast into the folding clamshell. Imperial swords have an anchor and Imperial crown above. Weimar and Third Reich swords just have a single anchor cast into the clamshell.
This is a great uncleaned example of a naval officers sword that was used in the Third Reich era. All brass fittings everywhere. Lions head pommel and cast back strap and D guard. Has folding front clamshell and folding rear lozenge to lock the blade into the scabbard. Both the lock and the top of the scabbard are stamped with the quartermaster issue number ‘O474’. The O stands for ‘Ostsee’ so this would have come from one the West ports of Germany, Hamburg, Bremerhaven or Wilhelmshaven. It has a cream celluliod over a wood base grip with twin twisted wires. Tied on a complicated way, is the original large bullion silver portapee. It shows a little wear where it has rubbed coming out of the tie, but otherwise is fine and complete. The black leather scabbard is complete with the three brass fittings.Each fitting is stamped with the number 9 (or could be 6!). The lock lozenge is also stamped with the same number. All part of the matching assembly process. The top two have carrying rings. The scabbard leather is in very good condition. There is a slight crease in the leather in the bottom half where the scabbard has bent at some time. It is however perfectly sound and intact. The blade is a polished steel variety with the normal pipe backed upper edge. Blade is in very good condition with no damage and a bright finish.
There is no makers mark to be seen on the riccasso, however it is stamped with a super little Marine ‘M’ with an anchor underneath.
A proper, real and untouched naval sword.
