AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF A THIRD REICH/WEIMAR OFFICERS NAVAL SWORD.

German naval swords are very interesting as they changed very little from WW1 to WW2. The same basic sword, with a few subtle changes was carried from the early 1900’s until the mid 1940’s. This is a lovely all brass example and has the early 1930’s ALCOSO trademark. A ‘standard’ officers sword so has a plain lions head hilt without glasses and plain nickel plated blade. A perfect cream celluloid grip with ALL the twisted brass grip wire. As this was carried in the Third Reich period, by an officer who served in the Kriegsmarine, it has a great bullion portapee tied in the very complicated way. It’s very difficult to do and this one is frozen in place after being tied over 80 years ago. They had a habit of rubbing and wearing out where the ball comes out of the tie. This knot has been period reinforced. A good job too!! All these swords were depot issued and marked accordingly. This has O 2016 stamped into the upper scabbard fitting and the fold down locking langet. Navy swords are only stamped with a O or a N. Ostsee (Wilhelmshaven) or Nordsee (Kiel). Scabbard leather is in excellent condition with no issues. Three brass scabbard fittings with the upper 2 with carrying rings. Blade is in stone mint condition. Quite long, and with MOST navy blades, is piped backed. Reverse riccasso has a circular ALCOSO trademark. The sword is further marked with 2 tiny marine M with small eagle. Underneath the hilt crossguard and on the bottom scabbard drag fitting.
A really lovely navy sword.
