AN INTERESTING SS ‘OFFICER CANDIDATE’ SWORD BY EICKHORN.

These were legitimate parade swords that could be purchased by the Officers themselves and worn accordingly. The actual SS OFFICER DEGEN. was presented only, you could not go and buy one yourself. These candidates swords are virtually identical the the SS degens but do not have the large SS button inset into the grip. They are also constructed in a different way, insomuch as they are made like police officers swords and the top pommel unscrews which holds all the grip and hilt onto the blade tang. SS degens are not like this. Sword is in very nice overall condition. Nickel plated steel hilt. Black ebony wood grip with single vertical wire wrap. Unusually this individual has had a nice enamel SS runes button professionally inset into the pommel cap. Lovely work. Scabbard is anodised/blued instead of being painted. Upper and lower fittings are attached by headless screws. There is a white leather blade buffer. The blade is very nice indeed and has the Eickhorn 1935/42 squirrel deeply stamped into the riccasso.
