A BEAUTIFUL IMPERIAL NAVAL OFFICERS SWORD BY WK&C WITH ORIGINAL RED/BLACK KNOT.
Naval swords from WW1 did not change much into WW2 British naval swords are also very similar to their German counterparts. This is a very ‘dainty’ naval sword, smaller than most and WK&C made thrm with great detail thought. All brass hilt and scabbard fittings. Lions head pommel with red and green eyes. Cream ‘bone(!) grip with triple wire wrap. Commensurate age lines throughout the grip. Tied around the grip in the VERY complicated knot is the original Imperial navsl officers bullion portapee. These are wonderful knots. Heavy bullion construction with the Imperial colours of red and black inter woven into the cords. It has a large bullion acorn with red/black stuffing in the bottom. The hilt has folding front and rear clamshells. The larger front has an Imperial crown cast into the brass. The reverse locking one has the ORIGINAL OWNERS NAME, beautifully engraved in script. It reads ‘.A, Hoppner ‘. Could be the subject of further research. The black leather scabbard is in near mint condition with the three brass scabbard fittings. The top two have carrying rings, the bottom one incorporates the drag. All are fixed to the scabbard by staples. It also has a rare short leather hanger attached to the rings The pipe-backed blade is profusely etched with naval motifs, battleships and crossed canons, with the Imperial crown with scrolls below. There are quite a few old finger smudges etc on the blade surfaces, which have gone dark over the past 100 years. I’ve not attempted to clean the blade, but I am sure it would respond well to a little care. Overall this is a really nice example of a very pretty sword by WK&C.
