A RARE EARLY ARMY DAGGER WITH SLANT GRIP . PERSONALISED WITH ORIGINAL KNOT AND HANGERS.
Like many Third Reich daggers, the initial production pieces differ from those that were made later in the period. Type of materials used changed, as well as some basic production designs, owing to cost and economies of scale.
Early army daggers were no different, and are highly collected as they are few and far between.
This is a lovely example by Carl Eickhorn and follows all the production idiosyncrasies shown in Tom Wittmanns army dagger volume.
The crossguard and pommel are in brass but heavily silver plated. The crossguard eagle is the first type used by Eickhorn and is pictured on page 24 of his book. The blade on this piece is in mint condition and carries the small oval trademark used from 1933-1935. The mid-orange celluloid grip features the very early ‘deep slanted’ grooves on the grip. Scabbard is damage free with no lifting and has the single rear screw and slightly fatter throat.
A typical Eickhorn trait. There is a 42cm bullion knot tied in the correct manner. By the look of the wear to the cord in the swing area, this looks to be the original knot! There are a nice set of standard army hangers with green velvet backing.
A very hard to find early piece.
