A VERY EARLY AND RARE ‘FULL STAG’ RAD HEWER.
These were the very first RAD hewers made, and only by Carl Eickhorn. Initially the grip consisted of two identical pieces of hand carved and fitted stag horn. They were shaped to look like the recognisable eagles head and beak at the top. This design proved to be too expensive and time consuming, so the hilt was changed significantly. The metal part was extended to become the ‘beak’ and the stag was cut to uniform sizes go fit the grip space. All these early daggers are ONLY made by Eickhorn. ALL have a anodised black scabbard body and ALL have the early 1933-35 small oval Eickhorn trademark etched into the reverse riccasso. This dagger has all of those things. A very nice shaped stag grip. Solid nickel hilt. Nickel fittings to the scabbard, and remarkably a fill covering of the original black finish to the scabbard body. The lower fitting has a dent to the side (not bottom) and is on the reverse edge. A very nice, near mint large bowie style blade, with the RAD motto Arbeit Adelt etched onto the surface. These daggers were carried by ALL ranks of the RAD until the much reduced size Officers version was introduced in 1938. Often missing from most collections. A very good example.
