FIRE OFFICERS TRIPLE ETCHED SWORD, PERSONALISED ETC BY W.K & C.

Whilst the Fire Dept in Germany were technically not part of the military, they seems to be treated as such and from Imperial times, Officers and then firemen were issued with parade swords and sidearms. This is a beautiful triple etch sword, which I think started life in the late 20’s or early 30’s. I am sure it was certainly carried into the Third Reich era too. Beautifully made, it has a heavily nickel plated ‘dove head’ hilt. Grip is made of fish skin/ray skin and has a triple silver grip wire. There is a very large sword portapee in black leather with triple wires and a large silver acorn. The front langet has a perfect FIRE engraving which consists of a shield with a fire helmet in the centre bordered by crossed fire axes! The reverse langet has the owners initials engraved in a flowing script. Looks to be R H.
Scabbard is black leather with triple nickel fittings which are stapled to the reverse and each are numbered. The blade is triple etched with the obverse side having ornate scene depicting ladders, foliage etc. the reverse side is equally ornate and features a small crossed cannon? Or could be a fire hose nozzle. A very impressive piece indeed and the Fire Chief or very senior officer who wore this on parade would have been very proud of it.
The makers mark of W.K & C is found underneath the front langet on the blade surface. This type of WKC trademark would date this from pre WW1 until the late 1920’s/early 1930’s. A great looking sword.
