A VERY RARE FORESTRY CUTLASS BY HOLLER WITH EAGLE & SWAZ IN THE FERRELL
I’ve been lucky enough to own a couple of these rare daggers. The last one was unmarked and went Tina collector in Germany. This is a Subordinste Forestry cutlass by FW HOLLER. To find these cutlasses with the Third Reich National symbol cast in the ferrell is extremely hard. The organisation was only ‘nationalised’ by the Third Reich 1939 and before then they did not carry and national symbols.
As the war started in 1939, distribution and manufacture of these items started to slow down and new designs were few and far between.
Hilt etc is all cast in brass and then fire gilded. This remains on about 50% of the lower half, but the top half seems to have been more exposed to the atmosphere (moisture?) so has lost this and is just a dark brass colour. The stag horn grips retain all of the acorn buttons. The Ferrell has a short wing eagle and very small swastika cast into it and underneath there is a nice clamshell with a hunting dog cast into it. Scabbard is in lovely condition. Hard black leather with brass upper and lower fittings in perfect condition. The blad is in mint condition with dark grey etched panels showing hinging scenes etc running horizontally up the blade not sideways. The blade buffer is in place and the HOLLER trademark is on the reverse riccasso. Amazingly clear as you can see all the individual markings on the Holler thermometer
