RARE SHORT THIRD REICH CLAMSHELL POLICE BAYONET WITH FROG.

A recent purchase from the SOS in America. This is a super example of one of the MANY interesting variants of Police bayonets. I have said before, it’s quite possible JUST to have a huge collection of police bayonets and sidearms as there are so many different examples. This is a quite small and short bladed type with a clamshell. These are often associated with Officer rank, as the ordinary policemen wore the much longer version. Nickel plated brass hilt features the standard eagle head pommel. Narrow stag grips, nickel clamshell featuring a Prussian type eagle. Leather scabbard with nickel upper and lower fittings stapled to the scabbard body. There is an original small type brown leather frog, original to the piece. The nickel plated short blade is a single edged bayonet type, and measures just over 10”. There are a few minor surface blemishes on one edge, but nothing serious and no damage or pitting. The reverse riccasso features a very early Eickhorn trademark of a squirrel inside an oval. This trademark was used by them from 1921-1933, so this bayonet/dagger started life with a Weimar ‘star’ grip badge and was updated with the Third Reich police badge at the start of Hitlers Germany. A real bit of history in a collectable! A great addition to a Police collection.
