AN EARLY SS ‘33 BY GOTTLEIB HAMMESFAR.

A very decent example that I purchased over this past weekend. Not been in a collection before. It’s been left alone so is basically uncleaned with age patina etc. These were carried by all ranks of the SS, both officers and men, until the chained SS was introduced for officers only in 1936. This is a great early example from around 1934/35. All solid nickel fittings. Lower crossguard marked with Roman numeral III. Near perfect black ebony wood grip with nickel eagle and enamel SS button. One VERY small chip to the grip in reverse left corner. Otherwise fine. Scabbard has nickel fittings and a TINY dent go the lower ball. This is an ‘anodised’ early finish go the scabbard surface which is mostly intact, but there are a couple of small areas where the surface is rougher. It looks as if it once had a vertical hanger in place and the leather trapped some moisture between it and the metal surface. Not an issue though. The blade is in Exc++ condition with most of the original crossgrain polish etc and good definition to the lettering. There are two small ‘blemish’s’ Which prevent the blade being mint, where the interior scabbard runners have rested on the blade surfaces and slightly marked it. Very minor but I have mentioned it.
The Hammesfar oval trademark with pyramid in the centre, is deeply etched into the rear riccasso area.
Overall a very nice dagger. Priced very competitively.
