QUITE A UNIQUE ‘TRANSITIONAL’ SA DAGGER BY EICKHORN WITH TRIPLE HANGER.
As far as I can remember, in all of the 100’s of SA daggers I have owned and handled, I’ve not had such an early ‘transitional’ Eickhorn SA dagger.
Obviously at some point in the years of production, they ‘transitioned’ from the early daggers, with their solid nickel fittings etc, to being controlled by the RZM process. They then used nickel plated zinc crossguards, painted scabbards and nickel plated steel fittings to the scabbard etc. THIS dagger represents the last of the old style and just the beginning of the new. Right on the transition crossover. The uncleaned fittings are nickel and have gone a lovely yellow with patina. A perfect grip with nickel eagle and enamel SA button. However, the lower crossguard in NOT stamped with a Gau area (none of the RZM period daggers are), but it has a bench mark number stamped under the crossguard! The scabbard is quite beautiful. With all of the original anodised finish and some lacquer (not painted as all RZM period ones are. Attached to the upper scabbard ring is a nice mid-period short hanger, an unmarked snap clip, a belt loop and a unique grip loop which is actually a tiny leather strap with a buckle, not a popper!
The blade is STONE MINT with all the crossgrain polish, deep colour to the Alles fur DEUTCHLAND motto. The Eickhorn squirrel trademark in etched onto the reverse riccasso along with a large RZM circle and the Eickhorn code M7/68.
It’s a lovely dagger and I imaging they were using up the last of the early parts, with the very first of their RZM blades. Marvellous thing.
