EXTREMELY NICE 1936 SS CHAINED OFFICERS DAGGER.
A lovely example. A perfect ebony grip with inset eagle and undamaged SS runes button. Nickel silver upper and lower crossguards. The reverse of the lower on has a Gau mark stamped into it. Nrh. For many years both me and experienced dealers in this subject thought the crossguard had been replaced since the war. However, we were all wrong as untouched original pieces keep appearing occasionally. I’ve probably had 5 or 6. These daggers were made in a factory that also made SA daggers, and all they did was use up ‘old stock’ marked SA crossguards!! Tom Wittmann has mentioned this several times in his ‘Down the Cellar Unboxings’ and I think there is an example in his SS book. Anyway, it looks great and the whole hilt assembly fits like a glove, as it should. The scabbard has all the original ‘anodised’ finish and with that, the central chain fittings has two dome head screws holding it to the scabbard body. It is fitted with a very nice, quite heavy Type II chain with the normal links alternating a scull and SS runes. The last 2 links joining the chain to the cloverleaf clip are bevelled. The is a nice deep SS Kulturzeichen stamp on the reverse of one link.
The plain, unmarked blade is in virtually mint condition. No damage or faults. Very clear SS motto etch and all crossgrain polish.
