One of my favourite sword types and part of the 9 group of Eickhorn swords known as the ‘Field Marshall’ series. This is a long sword measuring about 38” overall, so the original owner was a tall chap! This is one of the few Third Reich swords that has an eagle and swastika incorporated into the hilt design TWICE. Once on the crossguard with a great open wing eagle, and again on the dove head pommel of the hilt with a closed wing, Wehrmacht type eagle. These swords were all made of the period cast alloy and then gilded. The Prinz Eugen had a particularly bright type of gilding, which on nearly all of the surviving examples, has gone dull and blended into the base metal. This has happened on this sword but a lot of the fire gilt has remained in all the protected nooks and crannies. It’s given it an impression of age patina, and I think it looks great. No one has attempted to polish it or buff the remaining surfaces, so has remained untouched. It also has an original ‘Grosse’ style officers sword portapee. Wide green leather straps with triple silver wire running the lengths. The acorn ball is much bigger than the standard knot type too. These portepees are rare to find anyway, but suits this sword perfectly. The black celluloid grip is perfect and has triple aluminium wire wrap. The long black painted scabbard is virtually mint. The blade again is near 100% mint. Is bright nickel plated and has the 1935-42 Eickhorn trademark deeply stamped into the reverse riccasso. The original red leather sword buffer/washer is also intact (Prinz Eugen swords always have a red blade washer!). The very tip of the blade is very slightly bent as I imagine it’s been stuck into something hard at some time in its life. Does not detract though. A really great looking sword and now becoming very hard to find.
