DOUBLE PERSONALISED ARMY OFFICERS DAGGER.
This later period dagger is actually dated, so we can identify it exactly. Dagger has a nice cream celluloid grip, plaster filled. The generic crossguard (similar in design to the WKC type) has been period ‘enhanced’ by gilding the surfaces. Just the eagle and swastika has been done, not the rest of the crossguard. Scabbard is dent free and in good condition with plating intact. The blade is where the interesting personalisation has taken place. It’s non-maker marked and still in very good condition with a few finger smudges but a lot of crossgrain visible. The original owner has engraved his name and date 1942, along the flat center part of the blade near the crossguard. It’s been done with an engraving pen I think. It reads ‘KW Mentz 1942’. On the reverse is engraved ‘Paris ???’ The same name is scratched/engraved into the reverse of the crossguard and reads ‘ KW Mentz’ and underneath ‘Luneberg’. A most interesting dagger and perhaps worth of a little more research.
